Villa or riad in Marrakech: which one is right for you?
Marrakech offers two very different ways to stay: the riad, a traditional house in the Medina built around an inner courtyard, and the villa, usually set in gardens outside the city. Both are wonderful. The right one depends on how you like to travel.
The riad: life in the heart of the Medina
Riads are traditional houses hidden behind the walls of the old city. Their rooms open onto a central courtyard, often with a fountain or a small plunge pool. Step out of the door and you are in the lanes of the Medina, a short walk from the souks and the main square.
The trade-offs: rooms are usually more compact, the courtyard is often shared with other guests, cars cannot reach most lanes, and the city stays lively late into the night.
The villa: space, privacy and nature
Villas are found in the countryside around Marrakech, in the Palmeraie or along the roads towards the Atlas. They offer what the Medina cannot: gardens, a private pool, room for a whole group under one roof, and silence at night.
The trade-off is distance: you will need a transfer or a car to reach the city.

Which one suits you?
- Choose a riad for a short city break, to explore the Medina on foot, or for a trip as a couple.
- Choose a villa for a family holiday or a stay with friends, for a pool of your own, outdoor space for children, or a calm base between visits to the city.
Many travellers combine both: a couple of nights in the Medina, then a few days of calm in the countryside.
Dar Amna: a villa 25 minutes from the Medina
Dar Amna is a private villa on a 7,000 m² estate of olive groves in Sidi Abdellah Ghiat, 25 minutes from Marrakech. Four king suites, two lounges filled with Berber pieces and Moroccan art, a private pool and a team on site every day: the calm of the countryside, with the Medina within easy reach.
