Day trips from Marrakech: the Atlas, the desert and the coast
One of the joys of staying near Marrakech is how much lies within a day’s reach: high mountains, stony desert, waterfalls and the Atlantic coast. Here are the classic escapes. Travel times are approximate, from Marrakech.
The Atlas Mountains
The Ourika Valley, about an hour away, follows a river through Berber villages and is lovely for a gentle walk and lunch by the water. Further up, Imlil, about an hour and a half away, is the gateway to Toubkal National Park and North Africa’s highest peak.

The Agafay desert
Less than an hour from the city, the Agafay is a stony desert of golden hills with the Atlas behind. Perfect for a sunset, a camel ride or a dinner under the stars.
Lake Lalla Takerkoust
A large lake at the foot of the mountains, under an hour away, for a peaceful lunch with a view.
Further: waterfalls and the ocean
- The Ouzoud waterfalls, among the highest in North Africa, about two and a half to three hours away
- Essaouira, the white and blue port on the Atlantic, about two and a half to three hours away
At Dar Amna, our team can help arrange excursions on request. Come back in the evening to the calm of the olive groves and a swim in the pool.
