Essaouira: a day trip to the coast from Marrakech
After the warmth of Marrakech, the Atlantic breeze of Essaouira feels like a breath of fresh air. This white and blue port is a favourite day trip, about two and a half to three hours by road.
The medina and the ramparts
Essaouira’s walled medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site: whitewashed houses with blue shutters, art galleries and woodwork shops, all inside sea-facing ramparts.
The fishing port
Blue fishing boats, seagulls and the morning catch: the port is one of the liveliest scenes of the town. Many visitors stop for grilled fish nearby.

On the way
The road crosses the argan country, where you may spot goats climbing the trees, and passes cooperatives where women produce argan oil.
Tips
- Bring a windbreaker: the coast is often windy and cooler than Marrakech.
- Leave early to enjoy a full day.
- It is a long day: plan a calm evening back at the villa.
