Things to do in Marrakech: the essentials
Marrakech rewards curiosity. Here are the essentials for a first visit, best enjoyed in small doses with calm days in between.
The Medina and the souks
The old walled city is a maze of lanes where spices, leather, lanterns, rugs and ceramics are sold in tiny shops. Get lost a little, and bargain with a smile.
Jemaa el-Fna square
The great square at the heart of the Medina changes through the day: orange juice stalls in the morning, then musicians, storytellers and food stalls as night falls. Go at sunset and watch it from a terrace.
Gardens and palaces
- The Majorelle Garden, with its famous blue villa, and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum next door
- The Bahia Palace, with its painted ceilings and courtyards
- The Koutoubia Mosque and its gardens, the city’s landmark
- The Saadian Tombs and Le Jardin Secret in the Medina

Moments to slow down
A traditional hammam, a mint tea on a rooftop, a Moroccan cooking class: Marrakech is also about taking your time. And when the city gets too lively, the calm of the countryside is only 25 minutes away.
Tips
- Explore in the morning or late afternoon, especially in summer.
- Wear comfortable shoes: the Medina is best discovered on foot.
- Carry some cash in dirhams for small shops and taxis.
