The Agafay desert near Marrakech
You do not need to cross the country to feel the desert. Less than an hour from Marrakech, the Agafay is a landscape of golden, rocky hills with the snowy Atlas on the horizon.
A stony desert
The Agafay is not the sand dunes of the Sahara, which are many hours away, but a vast plateau of stone and earth whose colours change with the light: pale at noon, gold and pink at sunset.
What to do
- Watch the sunset over the hills and the Atlas
- A camel ride or a quad bike outing
- Lunch or dinner in a desert camp, under the stars

Tips
- Bring a warm layer: evenings in the desert can be cold, even in spring.
- Sunglasses and a scarf protect from the sun and the dust.
- Book camps and activities in advance in high season.
