The hammam in Marrakech: what to expect
The hammam is part of daily life in Morocco: a place to wash, relax and meet. For visitors, it is one of the most memorable experiences of a stay in Marrakech.
How it works
You move through warm, then hot, steam-filled rooms. Your skin is covered with black soap, a soft olive-based paste, then scrubbed with a rough glove called a kessa. Many treatments end with a ghassoul clay mask and a rinse of warm water.
Public hammam or spa?
Neighbourhood hammams are simple, inexpensive and authentic, with separate times or sections for men and women. Spa hammams in hotels and riads are more private and comfortable, often with a massage afterwards.

Tips
- Bring a swimsuit or underwear to keep on, and flip-flops.
- Drink water before and after.
- Plan a calm evening afterwards: the hammam is deeply relaxing.
